Who Should Attend?
MRCI’s program will suit any gap year or young traveller wanting to experience the excitement and adventure of sailing a classic tall ship whilst exploring the magical island of Madagascar. This program is also for individuals who want to kick-start a career in sailing or the marine industry, as well as for those who are wanting to develop teamwork and leadership skills.
What’s the Sail Training About?
Luna Moon Sailing Academy training programs are held in Madagascar aboard our famous 118ft gaff rig schooner Luna Moon. We also offer passage courses, where students can log valuable sea miles and experience. We are an internationally recognised sail training academy and our IYT syllabus is accepted by all major charter and insurance companies. All our courses comply with and carry the IYT (International Yacht Training Worldwide) seal of excellence.
Luna Moon Sailing Academy offers 3 training certificates as well as a practical sail training program designed to build sea miles and on water experience. Our courses include a cultural immersion experience, whereby students are taught how to sail traditional Malagasy Dhows and pirogues by local skippers. We also host children from the local schools, villages and the local sea scouts aboard Luna Moon for an afternoon sail in the bay.
International Competent Crew
$1200 // 14 DAYS
Seeking a career on super yachts or in the marine industry? This course will provide you with the grounding and basic seamanship needed to crew onboard a motor boat or sail yacht. Training onboard a classic vessel such as Luna Moon has added advantages not found on regular much smaller sail training yachts. With no winches or electrical gear to assist with the hoisting of sails students quickly come to terms with the power and driving forces the wind can provide. Besides sailing between the several tropical islands and building your all-important sea miles, the Luna Moon Sailing Academy will teach you leadership and teamwork skills, all while forging new friends.
$425 // 5 DAYS
This add-on course is designed to enable the more capable sailor to navigate extended passages. It includes practical navigation exercises and sample chart work and calculations. It is recommended that you complete the International Competent Crew course before starting this course. We recommend that you complete this course in conjunction with the practical sailing and mile building course.
Marine Communications VHF
$170 // 2 DAYS
Every member of the crew should know how to operate the onboard radio for safety reasons and this add-on course is designed to ensure that you acquire a thorough understanding of marine radio communication at sea. This course can be done simultaneously with the Competent Crew or Practical Sail Training and Mile Building course but requires attending class after normal hours.
Practical Sail Training & Mile Building
$600 // PER 7-DAY WEEK
To crew or captain a vessel safely requires practical training and experience at sea. There is no better way to gain this experience and build sea miles than being aboard the classic gaff rig schooner Luna Moon. Sail the west coast of Madagascar and across the Mozambique channel to South Africa. All our offshore passages will add a minimum distance of 600 nm to your log per leg.
